Jaypee Punjab Warriors will look to win against Ranchi Rhinos on home ground

Having suffered the disappointment of being beaten in the opening game of the Hero Hockey India League, Jaypee Punjab Warriors would try to get a better result at home when they take on Ranchi Rhinos in Jalandhar on Wednesday.

Jaypee Punjab Warriors will need better co-ordination among star studded forward line including Jamie Dwyer, Shivendra Singh, S V Sunil, etc.

Warriors fought well against Delhi Waveriders on Monday, but their forward-line failed to create enough goal-scoring opportunities, and that is something that the team think tank would have worked on, on Tuesday, their only rest day for the first four days of the tournament. The likes of SV Sunil, Shivendra Singh would have to play a more attacking hockey, if the Warriors want to be a lot more dangerous in the coming games.

Warriors skipper Jamie Dwyer admitted after Monday’s game that the team needs to do better. “We didn’t start the game well.  I think, as a team, we still need to combine a bit better. Hopefully, we would start doing that in the next few games,” the Aussie said on Monday night.

Even though Warriors lost the match, there was one outstanding performer on their side, and that was their goalkeeper Jaap Stockmann of Netherlands. Stockmann easily made at least half a dozen saves that kept Warriors in the hunt till the end against the Waveriders. Warriors would hope to see a similar kind of performance from the Dutchman, easily one of the top goalkeepers in this league.

On the other hand, Ranchi Rhinos would be hoping to get their Hero HIL campaign off to a good start in an away game. Ranchi Rhinos is one team in this league that has invested a lot in the local talent. And it would be interesting to see how the local youth joins hands with some top national and international stars.

The likes of Moritz Fuerste, Ashley Jackson, Austin Smith, Francisco Cortes would have the responsibility on their shoulders to guide the local talent. Then they have the young exciting talent of Birendra Lakra. The man from Orissa, who scored the opening goal in India’s London Olympics qualifying final, might be just 22, but there are a lot of expectations from him already. It would be interesting to see how he performs in this exciting format against the Warriors on Wednesday.

The team composition of the Jaypee Punjab Warriors could be another interesting factor. They go into the game against Ranchi Rhinos knowing that they have just a little over 24 hours before they take on Uttar Pradesh Wizards in the day’s only match on Thursday. Hence, keeping all the players fit, and giving them enough rest, could be another challenge ahead for the Warriors.

It was only after the Warriors were down by two goals on Monday that they started to play aggressively. The team management would like to see the Warriors to be a bit more proactive on Wednesday.

Jaypee Punjab Warriors player Simon Orchard said that their team have taken measures to counter the loopholes in their attack and defense, which was evident in their game yesterday and said: “We are confident in our performance tomorrow and will surely up our game and comeback strongly.”

Team captain Moritz Fürste was seen stating: “We have closely followed yesterday’s match and have created our strategies on those lines for tomorrow’s game. Punjab is a strong team, but we have studied their game thoroughly and will certainly utilize our strategy against them. We are confident of putting up a good show.”

The game is set for a 6 pm start, meaning that the weather would be at its pleasant best.

Delhi Waveriders Gear-up against Mumbai Magicians

Having got off to a good start in the Hero Hockey India League, Delhi Waveriders would try to maintain their position at the top of the points table as they take on Mumbai Magicians at home in Wednesday’s second game on Wednesday.

Rupinder Pal Singh and Simon Child of Delhi Waveriders (HIL) will need to be in their elements against Mumbai Magicians

Waveriders began the game against Jaypee Punjab Warriors with a very high tempo, and could have gone ahead in the first minute of the game. Waveriders would be hoping to get another equally good or even better start against the Mumbai Magicians, who have got some very dangerous players in their side.

Germany’s Oskar Deecke and Gurwinder Singh Chandi scored a goal each in the space of eight minutes that gave Waveriders a 2-1 win on Monday. And the Waveriders’ think tank would expect a similar performance from Deecke and Chandi.

The Sardar Singh-led unit might have won comfortably on Monday, but there was definitely scope for improvement in their finishing. Had they taken their chances, Waveriders could have won with a much bigger margin on Monday, and that is something they cannot afford to do against good teams. Drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh, handling the responsibility in the absence injured Taekema, failed to convert any of the three penalty corners that the Waveriders had against Warriors, and that’s something the Delhi outfit would need to improve upon.

Their opponents Mumbai Magicians would be keen to make a confident start to their Hero Hockey India League campaign, especially in an away game. They have done the hard work, they have prepared hard, and now is the time to show that all the preparations would result in to a good performance. All eyes would be on Magicians’ top star Sandeep Singh. Singh is a proven performer at the highest level, and the onus would be on him to deliver the goods. Magicians’ fortunes in Wednesday’s match, as well as in the tournament, would depend a lot on Sandeep Singh’s form.

Having said that, there are a number of other talented players in this Magicians’ side too. Foreigners like Joel Carroll, Matthew Swann would be keen to prove their worth in the tournament, as early as possible, and Wednesday would be a good opportunity for them.

Apart from Sandeep Singh, Magicians also have the likes of Sarvanjit Singh, Satbir Singh, P Thirumala Rao, from whom the team management would have a lot of expectations.

PR Sreejesh is known to be rock-solid inside the goal, and it would be a challenge for the Waveriders’ attackers to beat Sreejesh on a regular basis.

Magicians are coached by Australian legend Ric Charlesworth, who has worked in India as a coach before. His tactical strength is definitely a plus-point for the Magicians, as they take on Delhi Waveriders, the only team in this competition to have an Indian coach, in AK Bansal.

Spectacular start to Hero Hockey India League – Delhi Waveriders launch campaign with a victory

Hosts Delhi Waveriders launched their campaign in the Hero Hockey India League with a comfortable 2-1 victory over Jaypee Punjab Warriors at the Major Dhyanchand National stadium here on Monday.

Germany’s Oskar Deecke (14th min) and Gurwinder Singh Chandi (22nd) found the net for the winners while Australian Keiran Govers (42nd) scored the consolation goal for the visitors.

Captains of 5 HIL Teams during Opening Ceremony

Before the tournament opener, a laser show light up the Delhi sky and the spectators witnessed a special performance from figure skaters Alifya and Yuri and daredevil stunts of Jeenea set the tempo for the inaugural edition of the tournament and the sizeable crowd at the National stadium was hoping for a quality encounter in the opening match of the inaugural edition of Hero HIL and the teams did not disappoint.

The match began at a very high tempo with the hosts squandering a goal scoring opportunity in the very first minute.

With the Punjab Warriors pushing hard in their very first attacking move, the field was open for a an counterattack and Waveriders New Zealand forward Simon Child had just the goalkeeper to beat but he wasn’t that sharp to pounce on the opportunity despite taking three shots at goal.

Both the teams then tried to settle in the rhythm and it was the hosts who drew first blood in the 14th minute when Child began a move from the left and German international Oskar Deecke’s reverse hit was deflected inside the goal off the stick of a Warrior defender.

The Waveriders had an opportunity to double the lead in the 20th minute when Gaganpreet Singh’s harsh tackle on Child handed them their first penalty corner but Rupinder Pal Singh’s drag flick failed to beat the goalkeeper.

However, they had to wait just two minutes to find the second goal. India international Gurwinder Singh Chandi made a probing run from outside the 25 yards line on the right and his hit towards the goal was deflected in by the stick of Warrior defender Mark Knowles of Australia.

The hosts were obviously the dominating team in the second quarter but Rupinder could not convert the two penalty corners on the stroke on half time that could have given his team an almost unassailable lead.

The change of sides seemed to have woken up the Warriors as they began showing more intent in their attack and they were rewarded in the 42nd minute when S V Sunil broke through the right and Australian Keiran Govers showed his prowess in the box with a reverse hit in the top left hand corner.

Man of the Match-Jaap Stockmaan (Dutch Goalie of Jaypee Punjab Warriors) stopping Simon Child of Delhi Waveriders

The Warriors were indebted to their custodian Jaap Stockmann of Netherlands to have kept them in the hunt with almost half a dozen good saves but their forward line failed to make any clear breakthroughs inside the Delhi goal. Stockmann was adjudged Man-of-the-Match of the first match.

Jaypee Punjab Warriors’ coach Barry Dancer said at the post-match press conference that the team’s performance was not up to the mark and needs more improvement but said: “The team had better coordination and saw a much better performance in the second half. I am sure that the team will bounce back in the next match.”

Man-of-the-Match Stockmann believes that the team was really unlucky in the first half and lacked coordination. “Having played our first match as a team there was bound to be some confusion, we require much more practice and need to play together some more. But the team quickly learnt from the first half and performed far better in the second scoring a goal. We are sure to improve our performance in our next games,” he added.

On the other hand, Delhi Waveriders coach Ajay Kumar Bansal was excited with their current performance and feels that they have overshot their expectations by scoring two goals in the opening game. “The team was really positive and we have a lot to take back from this game. We have some areas to improve such as defence and are sure to come back as a much better team next game. We are really happy with the crowd today and thank all our supporters,” stated the only Indian coach in the Hero HIL at the post-match press conference.

Skipper Sardar Singh was very satisfied as the teams planning and execution was in sync today and said: “The first game is always crucial for the teams’ moral and we executed our roles well emerging victorious. Having played for a short span together we are really satisfied with our performance.”

“Hero HIL will Strengthen the Four Pillars of Hockey” – PR Sreejesh

Players, coaches, fans and sponsors are the four pillars on which a sport grows. These are main factors which jointly take a sport forward. Mumbai Magicians’ main goal-keeper PR Sreejesh believes that the Hero Hockey India League will strengthen these four pillars of Indian hockey. The League will improve the technical skills of players and coaches, as well as entertain fans worldwide and bring more sponsors to this sport.

P R Sreejesh

“The Hero Hockey India League will take us to a new level. Both players and coaches will gain a lot from the league,” Sreejesh said in an interview, adding: “The League will surely improve our physical and mental skills. All the teams have world class players and coaches, and they will apply their experience to bring high-level tactics on the field. The matches will be intense and that will improve our game.”

The 25-year-old goalkeeper says that all players and coaches will get enough opportunities to sharpen their skills in this League, which will help them in the long run. “Players will get an opportunity to play under some of the best coaches, learn new skills and tactics. We, especially juniors, will gain lots of experience by playing with top players. Coaches, on the other hand, will get a good chance to study various players and utilise the knowledge to build national teams for next year’s FIH World Cup,” Sreejesh said.

After the disappointment in 2012 Olympics, Kerala’s Sreejesh is taking Hero Hockey India League as a New Year gift. “This is the best event to start 2013 and I am looking forward to it this year. I am sharpening my skills for the upcoming international matches and this League will give me a decent chance to improve myself. I am very happy and proud to be a part of the League,” he stated.

Sreejesh is also delighted at getting $38,000 in the Hero HIL Players Auction, more than twice the Base Price of $13,900 and being bought by Mumbai Magicians. “Usually goalkeepers don’t get much money, but this is a good amount. I am thankful to my Franchisee for showing interest in me,” he added. The goalie will play along with international stars such as Sandeep Singh, Joel Carroll (Australia), Matthew Swann (Australia) and Mahmood Rashid (Pakistan).

Sreejesh was an athlete in his childhood days and he joined G.V. Raja Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 12. That’s where he saw hockey for the first time and he tried the sport for a change. Soon, he was selected in the school team and from then he has played tournaments at the school, district and state levels.

In 2004, Sreejesh played his first international match against Australia in Perth, which was a part of the practice matches for the 2005 FIH Junior World Cup in The Netherlands. But he didn’t make it to the final eleven in the junior world cup. In the 2006 South Asian Games, he debuted for India in Colombo. In 2007 and 2009, Sreejesh participated in the ASHF Junior Asia Cup, Hyderabad and the FIH Champions Challenge Trophy I, Salta (Argentina) respectively.

Sreejesh was part of the Indian team in the 2010 FIH World Cup in New Delhi. In 2011, his team won the 1st Asian Champions Trophy, held in Ordos City, China, beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final match. After returning from 2012 London Olympics, he went to Doha for the 2nd Asian Champions Trophy where they lost the final match against Pakistan.

The Keralite hails from Pallikkara village, where nobody knew about the sport before Sreejesh became famous. “Hockey is not so popular in Kerala and there are very few national players from this state. In my village, they know hockey as ‘the sport Sreejesh plays’, that’s it.”

There are 5 teams taking part in the league — Mumbai Magicians, Delhi Wave Riders, Ranchi Rhinos , and Uttar Pradesh Wizards – besides Punjab Warriors who will play the first  match against Delhi in Delhi on January 14. The final is scheduled to be played on 10 February.

To another question that why Jaypee Punjab Warriors did not buy the current Indian Hockey Stars Sardar Singh or Sandeep Singh? Mr Askari Zaidi, Senior Vice President, Jaypee Group, said: “Jaypee Group Chairman, Mr Manoj Gaur and Barry Dancer were very keen to have Sardar Singh in the team and we did make a serious attempt to get them in the side. However, since players being selected through auction, we could not manage because others were also trying for them hard. But Jaypee Group has been supporting both Sardar Singh and Sandeep Singh as they are our brand ambassadors.”.

“Moreover,” he added, “we have taken a number of young Punjabi players such as Gaganpreet Singh, Jaranpreet Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Ranjit Singh and Gurinder Singh, and we plan to give them best of training and coaching facilities to turn them into stars over the next few years.”

When asked where there were so many Australians in the team, Mr Jagbir Singh, Former Indian Hockey Captain, who is the Coach and Manager of the Team said: “Indian and Australian style of playing hockey is similar. Moreover, since the head coach is also from Australia, he knows Australian players very well and can make use of their talent in the best possible manner. Also, the Australian players have perfect field coordination, and during practice sessions Indian players will also be integrated into the overall field strategy to achieve the best possible results. After the first two practice sessions, I’m pleased with the way boys have gelled within the team and we are hopeful of putting up an exciting performance in the tournament.”

Jamie Dwyer, who has got world’s best player award several time, also told the media that Punjab Warriors were at an advantage because other teams have 2 or 3 players from 5 or 6 different countries, and they may find difficult to play as a well-oiled team in a period of few days that are left for the League to take off.
